Matthew had heard that there were Aboriginal rock paintings somewhere in Goanna Gorge, and he was determined to search for them.
"It's an adventure," he had told his parents. "I've always wanted to see what it's like to sleep by myself in the bush."
Discovering the paintings had been very exciting, but now Matthew realised he couldn't find his way back. He knew his father would send out a search party to look for him in the morning. But what if they didn't find him in time? If he had not been lost, cold, hungry and a bit frightened, he would have enjoyed his adventure.
When Matthew is found by a girl with no name, a whole new world opens up to him - the world of the Aboriginal Australian people.
